Rendered in Ice

Using C4D to render cubes of “ice,” Banafsheha toys with physical and impalpable notions of preservation. She manipulates a series of photos sent to her by her grandmother, serving as a tenderly awkward fight against time, an effort to retain a connection with memories headed toward oblivion and sociocultural worlds unraveling with assimilation. The Iran of Banafsheha’s family’s past has been thawed and thawed out again, but as she suggests in this project, perhaps we can hope that the intangible can be preserved in ways that the tangible cannot.
